Abstract

671,858. High-frequency discharge apparatus. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd. Dec. 30, 1949 [March 15, 1949], No. 33331/49. Class 39 (i). [Also in Group XL (c)] An electromagnetic wave amplifier comprises a length of hollow rectangular wave-guide 6, connected at one end to a source 7 of electromagnetic waves to be amplified and at the other to a utilization load 8, and a gas-filled discharge tube 1 setting up an oscillatory gas plasma along the wave-guide such that the plasma provides a negative resistance path for the said waves. The discharge tube envelope is transparent to the electromagnetic waves and is filled with a gas such as helium, neon, argon, krypton, hydrogen, nitrogen or mercury at a pressure of from 10<SP>-6</SP> to 10<SP>-2</SP> atmospheres. The cathode 2 and anode 3 are spaced 100 or more mm. apart and are connected through a currentlimiting resistance 5 to a battery 4 or to a lowfrequency current supply, the voltage of which is made adjustable so as to control the electron density and the electron transit time between the cathode and anode.
