Abstract

761,869. Discharge apparatus. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd. Aug. 14, 1953 [Sept. 4, 1952], No. 22496/53. Class 39(1). A wideband microwave attenuator comprises a length of rectangular waveguide 2, a gas discharge device having an envelope 3 extending along and substantially internally of a major portion of the waveguide, a reservoir 10 of a light gas having high ionisation potential and high breakdown power and an anode 5 and cathode 6, the gas pressure being such that the mean free path of the electrons is of the order of the cross-sectional dimensions of the envelope while the ratio of the surface area to the free volume of the envelope within the wave-guide, the unit of length being the inch, is greater than 50: 1, preferably approximately 70: 1, and means for connecting a source 4 of ionising potential between the anode and cathode. The envelope 3 can be of rectangular cross-section, and can be tapered at 7, 8 to reduce reflections of the R.F. signal applied to the attenuator. In the construction shown in Fig. 2 the envelope comprises two lengths 11a, 11b of rectangular cross-section joined at one end by a capillary tube 11c connected to the gas reservoir, each length of envelope having a side tube near the other end leading to the cathode or anode. In the construction shown in Fig. 3 the envelope 17 is of cylindrical cross-section and contains a pair of strips 21, 22 of insulating material such as mica to increase the ratio of surface area to free volume of the envelope. In the constructions shown in Figs. 4 and 5 the envelope comprises a length of capillary tubing 23, 27 folded so that the discharge traverses the major length of the wave guide at least twice. Fillings can be helium or hydrogen at a pressure of approximately 1 mm.
