Abstract

616,712. Thermionic power converters. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES Ltd. June 28, 1946, No. 19414. Convention date, Aug. 30, 1945. [Class 39 (i)] A thermionic cathode for an electron discharge device, for example a gas or vapourfilled rectifier tube, comprises a pair of metallic strips folded substantially transversely one over the other in successive interlocking reverse bends, to provide a mechanically rigid structure of large emitting area. Two strips 1, 2 of metal fabric coated with electron emissive material are placed across one another with their wide surfaces in contact. Each strip is then folded over the edge of the other to lie against the reverse face thereof. The foldings are then continued successively to form a pleated ribbon, which is extended and secured to binding posts. The structure may also be made up by intertwining already bent strips.
