Abstract
793,705. Cold-cathode tubes. TELEFONAKTIEBOLAGET L. M. ERICSSON. April 4, 1955 [April 2, 1954], No. 9850/55. Class 39(1). In a gear discharge trigger having a screen 4 with an opening 5 arranged between the cathode 1 and anode 3 near the anode to raise the ignition voltage, the ignition sensitivity is increased by positioning the ignition electrode 2 so that its discharge surface is located near a point on the cathode 1, which point lies nearer said opening 5 than any adjacent points on the cathode. The arrangement provides an unobstructed path between the ignition gap and the anode. The screen 4 may have no external connection and may be made of insulating material. The ignition electrode may be a metal strip arranged near the lower edge of the cathode or may be a rod projecting through a hole in the cathode. In an alternative arrangement the ignition electrode is a rod which is arranged parallel to a side edge of the cathode opposite a slot in the screen. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 5 the ignition electrode 2 is located at the lower edge of the cathode 1 and the screen 4 is formed of ceramic material and has a tubular portion enclosing the main anode 3. The tube is filled with a " Penning-gas," i.e. a mixture of two rare gases, one of which has a metastable energy level higher than the lowest ionization potential of the other, e.g. 99 per cent. neon and 1 per cent. argon.
