Abstract

486,502. Discharge lamps. FREEDMAN, P., and CROMPTON PARKINSON, Ltd. Dec. 1, 1936, No. 32994. Drawings to Specification. [Class 39 (i)] Finely divided refractory electron-emissive material is loosely supported within a lamp, in which the vapour pressure exceeds 4 atmospheres, so that it is readily dispensed in the region of the discharge during normal use. Solid or liquid electrodes may be used, and the material, e.g. thorium oxide may be incorporated within the liquid electrode or may form a loosely held layer on a solid electrode which may also have a firmly adhering undercoating of electronemitting material. A tungsten wire electrode may be wound with a wire which loosely supports thorium oxide. An auxiliary filling of argon or neon or a mixture thereof may be provided and the liquid electrode may consist of mercury or a mercury amalgam. It is stated that secondary electrons are liberated by the collision of primary electrons and particles of the material.
