Abstract

1,059,078. Discharge tubes. PHILIPS ELECTRONIC & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd. Oct. 8, 1964 [Oct. 11. 1963]. No. 41049/64. Heading HID. A gas or vapour filled discharge tube includes two electrodes in mechanical contact with one end of the envelope, which end has a symmetrically disposed internally projecting protuberance having an axial cavity, one of the electrodes resting'against the flank of the protuberance to be held thereby against radial displacement, and the other electrode contacting the bottom of the cavity. In a glow discharge stabilizer tube, the cylindrical metal gauze electrode (31) (Fig. 6, not shown) having a load wire (33) rests at its other end against the outer flank of the hollow protuberance (37), through the central cavity of which passes the pin electrode (34). The protuberance may be of glass or ceramic; it may be in the form of an interrupted ring; and a plurality of concentric protuberances may be employed (Fig. 2. not shown) to increase the surface leakage path between the electrodes. The current supply wires for both electrodes may enter from the same end of the tube. Various cross-sectional shapes and dimensions of protuberance, and dimension of tube. are referred to.
