Abstract

884,970. Arc torches. BRITISH OXYGEN CO. Ltd. Sept. 29, 1960 [Oct. 1, 1959], No. 33391/59. Class 39(3) A working fluid of carbon dioxide is introduced through a tangential inlet port 116 into a chamber 110 in an arc plasma torch to circulate about an arc between an electrode 115 of graphite or similar form of carbon in the chamber and a nozzle electrode 112 defining a restricted outlet from the chamber. It is stated that in spite of the use of a reactive gas as the working fluid and the absence of an inert shielding gas there is no excessive deterioration of the electrodes. The nozzle electrode 112 which is also of graphite is mounted in an aperture in a metal cylinder 111 provided with a passage for water cooling. The electrode 115 is screwed into a water-cooled metal cylinder 113 which is spaced from the cylinder 111 by a sleeve 114 of insulating material and is held in position by a fibre locking screw 119 after the electrode gap has been set. The assembly is completed by a gas-tight sealing ring 117 and an insulating end plate 118. D.C. electrical connections are made to the cylinders 111 and 113 as shown.
