Abstract

1,020,881. Arc blow torches. THERMAL DYNAMICS CORPORATION. Aug. 15, 1962 [Sept. 11, 1961], No. 31336/62. Heading H5H. An electric arc-torch comprises an electrode having an outer sleeve 12 and a separate core 13 contained with and contacting the sleeve, an electrode holder 11, a body 14 and a nozzle 15 which provides a passageway for arcstream 25. A ceramic swirl ring 19 may have tangential slots 20 to create a vortex of arc positioning and stabilizing gas in the nozzle passage. Electrode core 13 is of refractory metal such as tungsten and sleeve 12 is of less refractory material such as copper. The arc is initiated between sleeve 12 and nozzle 15 and transfers to core 13. The torch may be operated with workpiece 16 as the anode, or with nozzle 15 as the anode in which case the efflux consists of plasma forming gaseous elements or other fluids and substances introduced through aperture 31. Holder 11 may form the electrode sleeve. Core 13 may be slidable within sleeve 12 and positioned by a setscrew, Fig. 3 (not shown). Core 13 may be set back from the end of sleeve 12 to form a well, Fig. 4 (not shown).
