[Also in Division H5] A plasma arc torch for surface conditioning, e.g. stainless steel comprises a plurality of electrodes in a nozzle having an elongated outlet (i.e. length to breadth of outlet at least 4 :1). As shown, the torch comprises a watercooled nozzle 2 and a watercooled upper housing formed of three similar parts 6, 7, 8, each supporting an electrode 1, and insulated from one ananother by blocks 9, and electrically and thermally insulated from the nozzle by blocks 4, 5. Electric power is fed through water - cooled cables to unions on the water conduits supplying the housings 6 ... 8 and the nozzle. The arc may be started by H.F. discharge and maintained by D.C. and may be struck between the electrodes and nozzle or between the electrodes and work. The gas supply is arranged to swirl round the electrodes, and may be argon/nitrogen. Electrodes-for inert gases: preferably tungsten with 2% thoria; plain thoria, tungsten tube with thoria core; copper rod with tungsten or thoriated tungsten tip: for oxidizing gases:- water-cooled copper electrodes with zirconia or lanthaneum hexaboride insert. For desurfacing the torch is inclined at 20- 60 degrees to the work; for removing casting fins the angle may be near 0 degrees. Speed of movement may be 20-200 ft./hour.
