Abstract
1,068,174. Furnaces. ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. Feb. 21, 1964 [Feb. 22, 1963], No. 7262/63. Heading F4B. [Also in Division H5] In a furnace for, e.g., melting or smelting the charge is heated by plasma from electric arc blow torches. The torches may be connected for three-phase operation, and the arc may be between the electrodes, or between the electrodes and the pool of molten metal. The gas supplied may be combustible, or may react with the furnace charge. Exhaust gases may be fed to a heat-exchanger or recirculated to augment the plasma. The invention is described with reference to a shaft furnace and a hearth furnace, Figs. 1, 2 (not shown).
