Abstract

Two furnace bodies, connected by a channel, or gas duct, are used in this steel making process, and are employed alternately for (a) melting and refining; (b) charging with scrap and preheating; while one body is used for cycle (a), the hot exhaust gases travel through the gas duct into the second body where cycle (b) occurs, and both bodies can be tapped independently. Burners are pref. located in the gas duct to raise the the gas temp. during its travel from (a) to (b), and the pref. plant consists of two furnace bodies with interchangeable roofs and one interchangeable set of electrodes, with additional exhaust gas ducts located on the sides of the bodies to direct the flow of gas. Arrangement is used for steel making in direct current electric-arc furnaces, esp. using continuous operation. A substantial saving in energy and thus in cost is achieved; no handling of the preheated charge is required.
