Abstract
1,003,250. Arc blow-torches. BRITISH OXYGEN CO. Ltd. July 1, 1964, No. 27219/64. Addition to 979,353. Heading H5H. [Also in Division B3] Gas-shielded A.C. electric arc equipment has an auxiliary starting and maintaining electrode 11 attached to a bi-metallic strip 10. The strip is heated either directly by the starting D.C. current from rectifier 13 as shown, or indirectly by the heat of the main electrode 2 or by an auxiliary heater in the starting current circuit (Fig. 2, not shown). The electrode 11 initially touches the main electrode; consequent bending of the strip 10 upon closure of switch 6 opens a gap, drawing an arc between the electrodes, so ionizing the gas and starting the main arc. The strip remains heated to maintain the gap and the arc during main current zeros but resets automatically after shut-down. The main electrode is of tungsten and is non-consumable.
