Abstract

873,787. Electrically heated vacuum furnaces. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. Aug. 18, 1959 [Aug. 20, 1958], No. 26799/58. Drawings to Specification. Class 39(3). [Also in -Group XL(a)] In an electric vacuum furnace in which a charge is arranged to be simultaneously heated by radiant heat and electron bombardment, comprising a casing containing one or more electric resistance heating elements of electron emitting material, means are provided for supporting the charge and for connecting the charge, or electrically conducting means associated therewith, and the element or elements to the positive and negative terminals respectively of a direct current supply, preferably of 10 kv. The heating element is preferably of carbon and is disposed coaxially around the charge or the electrically conducting means (which may comprise a metal shield). There may be three carbon resistance elements connected to a three-phase alternating supply.
