Abstract
1,001,132. Arc furnaces. ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. April 17, 1963 [June 5, 1962], No. 21705/62. Heading H5H. An arc furnace has means for reducing voltage fluctuations in the supply mains comprising a shield 4 surrounding and extending beyond the end of the arc electrode 1 and means for cooling the shield. As shown, the shield is cooled by a gas such as argon or spent furnace gas supplied from containers 7 through a pipe line 6 and union 8 into the duct 5 between electrode 1 and shield 4. The shield 4 may melt at the temperature of the melt 2 and may comprise a plurality of layers of a material of poor thermal conductivity, e.g. carbon and material of good thermal conductivity, e.g. steel. Alternatively the shield may be non- consumable at the temperature of the melt and may be of insulating material. Means such as a screw thread or gearing are provided for maintaining the shield in the optimum position as the electrode is moved towards or away from the molten metal. The gas may also control the arc atmosphere.
