Abstract

A water-cooled, oxy-fuel burner made of copper is disposed downwardly and inwardly of the wall of an electric arc furnace so that on tilting the furnace molten metal contained therein may be refined. The burner, Fig.2 (not shown) comprises a central duct for oxygen &c., with a concentric duct for fuel both leading to a convergent-divergent nozzle and outer concentric passageways for cooling water. During melting, the burner is used the fuel then being turned off and the furnace heated by the electric arcs. Lime and silica may be supplied with the remaining oxygen, the furnace being titled to bring the burner tip below the melt level. More than one burner may be mounted in the furnace and the burner or burners may be used to supply nitrogen or argon, either alone, or with powdered lime as a desulphurizing agent. The burners may also supply a gaseous or solid carburizing agent such as propane, butane or powdered graphite or anthracite, or for introducing finishing materials, solid reagents being suspended in a suitable gas.
