Abstract
1421705 Sparking plugs; ignition systems CHAMPION SPARK PLUG CO 27 March 1974 [18 April 1973] 13706/74 Heading F1B A sparking plug includes a centre electrode assembly having a tip 29 positioned to define a spark gap with a ground electrode 15, the tip having an internal chamber, electrical heating means mounted within the tip chamber which in use pre-heats the engine combustion chamber prior to starting the engine and means for selectively applying electrical power to the heating means and to the tip including power control means having a high voltage terminal 43 for connection to an ignition system of the engine, means 25, 45 electrically connecting the high voltage terminal to the tip, a low voltage terminal 58 for connection to a power source and switch means 56 for selectively connecting the low voltage terminal to the heating means. As shown the switch means includes means 60 for simultaneously connecting the high voltage terminal to the plug shell when the low voltage terminal is connected to the heating means. The switch means 56 is actuated by a solenoid 53 . The chamber 61 is filled with an insulating oil. The solenoid is in circuit with a control switch (not shown). The control switch may include a timer or a thermal control.
