756,466. Electric measuring systems. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. Dec. 2, 1954 [Dec. 18, 1953], No. 35330/53. Class 40(1) [Also in Group XL(c)] Apparatus for measuring the clearance between a blade and the casing of a turbine comprises a fixed electrode 14 (Fig. 1) associated with a rotor blade 3 to form a capacitor which is charged by a D.C. source through a high resistance R4 (Fig. 2) so that the charge across the capacitor is effectively constant, and the cyclic variation of capacity produces a corresponding cyclic variation of voltage which is amplified and indicated at M. The electrode 14 is connected to the central core 15 of a cable having an inner shield 17, and an outer shield 18 connected to the casing of the turbine. The A.C. voltage on the probe lead 15 is amplified by valve V1 and fed to a cathode follower V2 with the meter M across the cathode resistor R8, the circuit connections being such that the charging current through R4 is adjustable at potentiometer R5 to compensate for the loss in charge through the grid leak R2, and a further charge is impressed on the electrode from a potentiometer R7 to compensate for the loss in charge by the stray capacities SC1, SC1<SP>1</SP>. SC2 between the probe lead 15 and the shields 17, 18.
