An impulse generator comprises an electromagnetic or electronic switch which co-operates with a pair of voltage sources E, E1, and an integrating amplifier A so as to produce impulses of which the mark/mark+space ratio is proportional to the ratio of the voltages from the respective sources. When V2b of the double diode V2 conducts, the output of A in due course triggers a bi-stable circuit V1 to make V1a conducting and Vlb non-conducting. V2a of the double diode then conducts and V2b effectively disconnects positive source E. Source E1 (of opposite polarity) then takes charge and conditions are reversed, the amplifier is designed so that the mean current in the lead from'the point O is substantially zero and the gain is sufficient to ensure that the input terminal remains close to earth potential throughout the cycle. In Fig. 1 (not shown) the double diode is replaced by an anode relay of V1a. Additional contacts of the relay may be included in circuit with a further voltage source and a meter.
