Abstract
778,560. Insulators. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. April 16, 1956 [April 18, 1955], No. 11509/56. Class 36. A high-voltage bushing insulator comprises a central conductor 12 having a terminal assembly at one end and surrounded by an impregnated insulating core 13, a ceramic shell 14 surrounding the portion of the conductor between the terminal and an annular metal mounting flange 15, an insulating tube 17 of machinable material surrounding the remaining portion of the conductor, the shell, flange and tube being connected together to form a chamber for dielectric fluid 25, and a conductive earthing sleeve 1,8 surrounding the portion of the tube adjacent the flange and electrically connected to the flange. A flanged member 16 is secured to the end of the conductor remote from the terminal and engages the adjacent end of the tube in a fluid-tight manner, the end of the tube being machined to engage with a shoulder 26 on the flange. The portion of the tube 17 adjacent the mounting flange 15 is machined to provide an interference fit with the sleeve 18. The core 13 may include electrostatic shield members and have, surrounding its central portion, an electrostatic shield 20 electrically connected with the mounting flange 15 by a lead 23 which may be removed to provide a capacitance tap on the insulator for metering purposes.
