Abstract

788,366. Machining by spark discharge. ELOX CORPORATION OF MICHIGAN. May 9, 1955 [Oct. 1, 1954], No. 13358/55. Class 83 (4). Apparatus for machining a workpiece 10 by electric spark discharge between the workpiece and an electrode 12 comprises a condenser 16 across the spark gap, which is charged through a variable resistor whose resistance is varied automatically and means 82 for limiting the maximum voltage across the gap to a value substantially less than that of the power source. The resistor preferably comprises a triode 44 whose anode 42 is connected to a full-wave rectifier 28, fed from one secondary winding 24 of a supply transformer 18, and whose cathode 48 is connected to workpiece 10, condenser 16 and through a rectifier 82 with the centre tap of the secondary winding. The latter is connected at 86 to the output of a rectifier 26 fed from a further secondary winding 22. The grid 60 of triode 44 has a grid leak resistor 62 and is connected through condenser 64 with the anode 66 of a control triode 68 which anode is supplied with current through resistor 70. Grid 78 is connected to a voltage source 80 and cathode 72 is connected to workpiece 10 and network 74, 76 in parallel with condenser 16. When condenser 16 discharges across the gap, triode 68 is caused to conduct and the reduced voltage thereby produced on its anode acts on grid 60 to bias valve 44 to cut-off. Current flows from condenser 76 to condenser 16 and after a delay sufficient for the spark gap to become de-ionized, grid 78 becomes gradually more negative and reduces current flow through triode 68 thereby increasing the voltage on its anode and on the grid of triode 44 causing the latter to conduct and re-charge the condenser 16. A pair of separate transformers may be used instead of the windings 22, 24. In practice a bank of up to one thousand triodes 44 may be used to conduct the charging current, one control triode 68 being used for each fifty or sixty charging triodes. In another embodiment, Fig. 4 (not shown) the control triode 68 is omitted. Means may be provided for rendering triode 44 non- conductive if a short circuit occurs across the spark gap. A dielectric fluid is maintained in the spark gap which may be kept constant or the electrode may be vibrated.
