Abstract
1,107,775. Discharge apparatus. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. 3 Jan., 1966 [21 Jan., 1965], No. 28/66. Heading H1D. [Also in Division B3] Apparatus Comprising a hollow member 23 providing a passage 26 for evacuation purposes is sealed by melting a fusible support 32 holding a plug member 31 so that the member 31 and molten support material drop into an enlargement 28 at the outer end of passage 26. The apparatus shown is a voltage tunable magnetron, part 25 of member 23 forming a cold cathode. The ball 31 is of silver-plated copper and the bridge 32 is formed partly or completely of solder metal. The bridge 32 may be replaced by a metal coil (39) (Fig. 4, not shown) and the frusto-conical enlargement 28 may be replaced by an enlarged cylindrical bore (40) (Fig. 5, not shown). Evacuation and sealing are effected in a vacuum furnace. The button type electrical connectors 41, 42 and 43 may be replaced by elongated metal tabs (Figs. 6 and 7, not shown) to enable further connectors to be spot-welded thereto at points remote from the leads 17 and 19 to the thermionic emitter 22 and lead 18 to the control electrode 14.
