Abstract
1417357 Filling gas discharge lamps BURROUGHS CORP 21 Feb 1974 [27 April 1973] 7845/74 Heading H1D Mercury is introduced into a gas discharge display panel by inserting a mercury-containing tubular metal capsule 10 inside the envelope and puncturing it after the panel is sealed, e.g. by means of a laser beam. The metal capsule is produced by filling a length of tube 12 made of iron or titanium with mercury 14, crimping portions of the wall as at 50 separating the tube at each crimped portion and hermetically sealing the end portions 40, e.g. by resistance welding. Typical capsule size is 0À4 inches overall length of which about half is filled with 6 mg. of mercury, the bore of the tube being about 10 mils. The arrangement is such that the capsule can be moderately heated in processing the panel without releasing the mercury, expansion of which is taken up by the crimped portions being forced apart.
