Abstract

1363238 Sealing discharge lamps GENERAL ELECTRIC CO 11 June 1971 [6 July 1970] 27586/71 Heading C1M [Also in Division H1] An arc discharge lamp is produced by positioning an electrode 21, 21<1> and lead 22, 22<1> assembly into each of two tubular stems 12, 13 extending from a lamp envelope 14, preferably of quartz, passing inert gas such as argon through the envelope via the stems whilst heating one of them, to seal it to the electrode and lead assembly, then applying a vacuum whilst the stem is still hot to collapse the stem on to the electrode and complete the seal, after which fill material and gas are introduced to the envelope, through the remaining stem, at reduced pressure, and the stem is heated and sealed at a point remote from the envelope, the reduced pressure causing the stem to collapse on to the lead. For use with direct current the anode electrode 21<1> is made longer than the cathode electrode 21 and is the first to be sealed. The electrode and lead assemblies may incorporate a foil section 23, 23<1> between the electrode and the lead and the initial sealing steps be made by pinch sealing the stem to the foil. The electrodes 21 are preferably of tungsten and the leads 22 and foils 23 of molybdenum.
