Abstract
1333686 Arc extinction in switches HUGHES AIRCRAFT CO 18 Feb 1972 [9 March 1971] 7615/72 Headings H1D and H1N An arc extingusihing arrangement, e.g. for connecting in parallel with the contacts of a high voltage D.C. circuit-breaker comprises a crossed field switch having spaced electrodes 110, 116, containing gas, e.g. hydrogen, to provide a glow discharge, and having a plasma injector 128 positioned adjacent the electrodes for injecting a plasma into the interelectrode space to cause a metallic are discharge between the electrodes, together with resonant means, e.g. a series capacitor/inductor circuit (not shown), connected to the electrodes for inducing a current zero to extinguish the metallic arc and thereby permit initiation of a glow discharge.
