Abstract

983,511. Load-break disconnecting switches. JAMES R. KEARNEY CORPORATION. Sept. 21, 1961 [March 22, 1961], No. 33825/61. Heading H2B. A load-break switch comprises main separable contacts 24, 29, shunt contacts 95, 100 which take the current on the initial separation of the main contacts, and an arc-breaking device 125 which is connected in shunt with the main contacts on their further separation and prior to the opening of the shunt contacts, the arc breaking device effecting final current interruption after the opening of the shunt contact 95, 100. In the arrangement shown, the circuit is maintained through the contacts 95, 100 until a conducting lug 153 on the contact-carrying arm 29 engages in a pivoted fork 151 on the arc-breaking device to complete a circuit through the device. Thereafter, the contacts 95, 100 separate and then the rotation of the fork 151 causes the opening of contacts within the device 125. The device 125 is detachably mounted in a socket 119 and is retained by a rotatable latch 128 having an arm 131 which may be turned by a switch stick to release the device 125 for removal by the switch stick.
