696,726. Gas-blast switches. METROPOLITANVICKERS ELECTRICAL CO., Ltd. Aug. 29, 1951 [Sept. 7, 1950], No. 20416/51. Class 38 (v) In a circuit-breaker having main gas-blast interrupting units 1, 1<SP>1</SP>, mounted on fixed insulating supports 2, 2<SP>1</SP> and a rotatable isolator extending between the units, the rotatable post insulator 6<SP>1</SP> carrying the movable isolator contact element also carries an additional gas-blast interrupting unit 9. In Fig. 2 each interrupter unit 1, 1<SP>1</SP>, 9 has two pairs of cooperating contacts (not shown) in insulating housings 1a, 1b, 9a, 9b 1a<SP>1</SP>, 1b<SP>1</SP> shunted by impedances in insulating housings 4a, 4b, 10a, 10b, 4a<SP>1</SP>, 4b<SP>1</SP>. The movable isolator contact element is in two parts 11a, 11b fixed on the housings 9a, 96 and cooperating with fixed contact elements 7, 7<SP>i</SP> on the housings 1b, 1a<SP>1</SP>. The additional interrupting unit 9 may serve as an additional main interrupting unit which opens simultaneously with the units 1, 1<SP>1</SP>, or it may serve as an auxiliary interrupter opening after the main interrupting units to interrupt or reduce the residual current through the main shunt impedances before the isolating switch contacts are opened. The unit 9 could also perform both functions, in which case one pair of contacts of the interrupter unit are arranged to open with the main interrupter units 1, 1<SP>1</SP>, and the other pair to open later to "break" or reduce the residual current.
