Abstract

930,101. Arc-rupturing in switches. WHIPP & BOURNE Ltd., and L. W. STOBART. July 30, 1959 [Aug. 2, 1958], No. 24972/58. Class 38 (5). An air-break circuit-breaker has polepieces 24 embracing an arc-chute 21 and extending from a single yoke 22 at the end of the arcchute remote from the fixed contacts 10, 12 so that the movable contacts 11, 13 approach the yoke when the contacts are opened, a single blow-out coil 23 being mounted on the yoke and being connected in series with the contacts at least upon their separation. Thus when the contacts are opened the moving contacts move towards the region in which the magnetic field due to the blow-out coil is strongest, so that the arc is blown more uniformly along arc runners 20, 30 into the arc-chute than is the case when the yoke is adjacent the fixed contact. The coil 23 may be connected between the fixed main contact 10 and the fixed arcing contact 12. The arc-chute may be provided with arc splitters.
