Abstract

548,810. Arc-rupturing in switches. REYROLLE & CO., Ltd., A., COATES, F., and TIPLADY, J. April 22, 1941, No. 5172. [Class 38 (v)] In an air-break circuit-breaker of the kind in which an arc is driven along arc horns in an arc chute and inserts resistance into the circuit the horn D is itself a strip of resistance material bent to provide arcing points D<SP>1</SP> separated by gaps F, the points being preferably reinforced by additional arc-resistant material D<SP>2</SP>. The chute may be of rectangular cross-section with the sides either parallel, Figs. 1 and 2 (not shown), or converging towards the upper end, Figs. 3 and 4 (not shown). The latter arrangement is employed in Fig. 5 in conjunction with divergent end-walls. The arc-movement may be produced by an air-blast or by a magnetic field selfinduced in a magnetic band C.
