Abstract

1,027,786. Vacuum switches. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. Feb. 3, 1965, No. 4735/65. Heading H2B. To prevent the deposition of conducting particles on to the insulating portions of the envelope of a vacuum switch, spaced tubular metallic shields 40, 44 surround the contacts 26, 28 and the gap between the shields is surrounded by a further shield 42. The shields are electrically insulated from one another and from the contacts. The gap between the shields 40, 44 is slightly larger than that between the opened contacts and the ends of the shields 40, 44 are looped at 70, 71 so that should an arc be blown from the contacts on to the shields, the resulting current path would provide a magnetic field to bow the arc back towards the contacts. Further shields 46, 48, 76, 78 may be provided to reduce deposition, the shields all having looped or curled ends to reduce electric stress concentrations and the capacitances between the shields providing satisfactory voltage distribution along the envelope.
