Abstract

722,248. Gas-blast switches; arc-rupturing in switches. ALLIS-CHALMERS MANUFACTURING CO: Dec. 23, 1952, No. 32670/52. Class 38 (5) A cross-blast switch has an insulating barrier 21, 22 disposed edgewise to the arc drawn between fixed and movable contacts 1, 2, arc runners 12, 13 adjacent to and connected to the contacts, and probe electrodes 29, 30 so arranged that when the arc is transferred to them it must extend transversely across the edge of the barrier with the arc roots downstream of the main portion of the arc. This ensures that the gas blast acting on the main portion of the are is not contaminated with metal vapours. The barrier member 22 and the nozzle-like member 11 forming the blast passage may be of gas-evolving material. Each arc runner 12, 13 may be connected to the adjacent electrode 29, 30 by resistors 31, 32 which shunt and cause rapid extinction of the sections of the arc loop initially formed between the runners and electrodes, the current in the main section of the arc between the electrodes 29, 30 then being limited by the resistors. Stacks 35, 36 of metal-cooling plates in the arc shoot 8 may be connected to the electrodes 29, 30.
