Abstract

832,316. Arc-rupturing in switches. ALLISCHALMERS MANUFACTURING CO. April 2, 1958 [April 9, 1957], No. 10688/58. Class 38 (5). A circuit-breaker similar to that described in Specification 754,726 has blowout coils 28, 29 embraced by arc - runners 30, 31 which extend from the coils away from the exhaust end of the chute to terminate at 70 in chimney vents 65, 66. The chute 26 has insulating plates 62 at right-angles to the direction of contact separation and insulating plates 63, 64 parallel thereto. The plates 62 may be slotted or apertured in a known manner and the plates 63, 64 may have apertures 80 to equalize the pressure in the channels between them. The inner chimney walls 73 are apertured at 74 for the same purpose. In operation the arc transfers from contacts 22, 25 to the runners at 77, bring- ing the coils 28, 29 into the circuit so that the arc terminals move along the runners into the ends of the chimneys 65, 66. The arc may then restrike at 78 and again move to the ends 70 of the runners, the process being repeated until the arc is extinguished.
