Abstract

733,846. Liquid-blast circuit-breakers. ALLIS-CHALMERS MANUFACTURING CO. March 13, 1952 [March 15, 1951], No. 20000/54. Divided out of 733,782. Class 38 (5). In a liquid-blast switch, an arc-extinguishing device has a fixed tulip-type contact 93, an upper laterally-vented arc-control stack, an auxiliary electrode 90 connected by a resistor 104 to the fixed contact 93, a lower laterally-vented arc-control stack, a pressuregenerating chamber 92 and a rod-like contact 94 movable through a passage 101 extending through the stacks and auxiliary electrode. When an arc is initially drawn between the contacts 93, 94 it is shunted by the resistor 104 and subjected to a transverse blast formed by the decomposition of oil in pockets 102 and vented through passages 99. The low-current arc subsequently drawn between the contact 94 and electrode 90 in series with the resistor 104 generates an appreciable amount of gas when extended into the chamber 92, the gases escaping through passages 112, 113 and vents 107 to provide a lateral arc-extinguishing blast.
