The arc formed on separation of the contacts of a circuit-breaker is moved towards fins in a fan-shaped arc-chute, the two faces 18, 19 of each fin being respectively of metal and insulation, the end of the metal face nearest the centre of the chute being bent back and being flush with the insulation, Fig. 5. The arrangement is such that the arc is split into several sections a<SP>1</SP>, a<SP>2</SP>, a<SP>3</SP>, one end of each of which roots on the end of a fin, whilst the other end moves up the metal face of the adjacent fin as at a1, all. The fins are arranged in grooves in insulating chute side walls 11a, 11b which on the outside carry magnetic plates 15, 16, 17 which with a coil (not shown) produce a magnetic blow-out. The gas-pressure produced by the arc in the chute may also assist extinction. In a modification, Fig. 9, the insulating faces 19 are formed with spaced holes 22 giving access to the rear of the metal faces and rivet heads are arranged in the holes.
