Abstract
533,834. Arc-rupturing in switches. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. Dec. 4, 1939, No. 31395. Convention date, Dec. 2, 1938. [Class 38 (v)] The arc drawn between contacts 1, 2 rises under the action of magnetic yokes 15, 16 secured to the contacts with their open ends facing each other, on to arc horns 1<1>, 2<1> in an arc chute comprising side plates 8 of asbestos board, between which are transverse copper pins 11 preferably spaced at three sixtenths of an inch from one another. To prevent short-circuit arcs from being driven out of the shoot, while allowing the gases to escape, a number of arcuate strips 12 of asbestos board, spaced apart one-eighth of an inch, are clamped one behind the other between the plates 8 by insulated bolts 13, or alternatively an integral moulded structure can be used. To prevent short-circuit arcs from burning the pins 11 adjacent the plates 8, the latter are recessed at the points where they receive the pins, or the ends of the latter may be turned down at those points.
