Abstract
487,452. Oil-blast switches. DAVIES, D. R., and METROPOLITAN - VICKERS ELECTRICAL CO., Ltd. April 19, 1937, No. 11161. [Class 38 (v)] A circuit-breaker has two (or more) pairs of mating contacts arranged in parallel, the moving contacts 1, 2 being arranged for simultaneous operation by the insulating cross-bar 9 and rod 10, and the breaks between them and their corresponding fixed contacts 3, 4 being either in the same explosion chamber or, as shown, in separate explosion chambers 7, 8, the explosion spaces whereof intercommunicate. The chambers shown are of the crossjet type, and contact 2 is slightly longer than contact 1, so that arcing is mainly confined to contacts 2, 4, but any arc that may occur between 1, 3 will be extinguished by the chamber 7 assisted by the pressure set up in chamber 8. In the closed position, both contact-pairs carry the load. Contacts 3, 4 are supported on a common base 5 supported on an insulator 6 projecting through the container-base. Contacts 1, 2 are guided in sleeves 11, 12 which are mounted on a support 13 and serve with 13 as current-connections. The container may be either cylindrical or, with two pairs of contacts as shown, of elliptic cross-section, and the connections may be led into and out of the container in the manner disclosed in Specification 395,088.
