Abstract
370,980. Arc-rupturing in switches. WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC & MANUFACTURING CO., East Pittsburg, U.S.A.- (Assignees of Slepian, J.; 1115, Lancaster Street, Pittsburg, U.S.A.) Jan. 13, 1931, No. 1133. Convention date, Jan. 27, 1930. [Class 38 (v).] High-tension switches.-The arc drawn between a fixed contact 1 and movable contact 2 is deionized by means of gases derived from an insulating tube 5 of "hard fibre" or other fibrous material which will decompose readily under the action of an arc, whereby the arc is extinguished at the zero of an A.C. cycle. A vent 6 allows egress of the gases which are cooled and further deionized by means of a system of surfaces 7 which may be of insulating material or metal. The insulating casing 3 is surrounded by an electrostatic shield 8 having embedded foil layers 9, 11 so that the voltage gradient is evened out when the tube 3 is long, as in H.T. working. A resistance or reactance .may, however, replace the shield. Since the arc formed when rupturing small currents is not large enough to decompose the tube 5, a second switch element 12 may be arranged with a resistance 13 in shunt with the switch element 1, 2 and arranged to open slightly after the latter. The cross section of its arc space 20 is smaller, so that the arc therein will have no difficulty in reaching the lining 18. In Fig. 4, a series of vents 6 and cooling surfaces is arranged along the arc-space where the latter is of considerable length, and barriers 23 are provided to prevent intermingling of the arcs. The switch may be immersed in oil or other insulating liquid. Specification 368,805 is referred to. Pneumatic blow-outs.-The deionizing action may be assisted by a blast of compressed gas admitted through a duct in the movable contact, or through orifices in a fixed insulating tube within such a duct. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) states also that the invention is applicable also to fusible cut-outs. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
