Abstract
647,132. Fluid blast circuit-breakers. AKT.-GES. BROWN, BOVERI, & CIE. Feb. 25, 1947, No. 5462. Convention date, March 11, 1946. [Class 38(v)] The arc struck when contacts a, b, of a high-voltage D.C. circuit - breaker are separated, is stretched in a blast chamber d to a lengtl such that the arc-voltage is greater than the terminal voltage. The arc is cooled by a blast of fluid, e.g. compressec .air, hydrogen, oil, water, or carbon tetrachloride, which i: given a spiral motion by blades f attached to the contact b, as shown, or mountec in hollow contact a, a gasifiable and vaporizable material may be added to the cooling fluid on the inlet or outlet side of the contact a, e.g. through the centre of contact b, or through pipes g 1 - g 4 . The chamber d may be of insulating or conducting material, and if the latter may comprise several mutually insulated cylinders connected to each other through resistances, Fig. 3 (not shown). The elements, or the chamber itself, may alternatively, be of resistance material, e.g. carborundum.
