Abstract

788,044. Automatic circuit - breakers. SQUARE D CO. May 29, 1956 [June 9, 1955], No. 16525/56. Class 38 (5). A manually - operable automatic circuitbreaker comprises an operating lever 35 pivoted. at 38 and having a pair of limbs 36 with recesses 37 for the limbs of a contact-carrying lever 41. A spring 43 anchored between the latter and a normally-fixed lever 31 pivoted at 32, imparts a snap-action opening and closing movement to the contacts and holds the end 34 of lever 31 in engagement with the latch surface 25 of a trip assembly. The latter comprises a series bimetal strip 11 welded to a connector 4, a magnetic yoke 12 welded to the strip at 13, and an armature 17 pivoted on lugs 16 of the yoke 12. An extension 21 of the armature 17 fits into a spring 22 so as to bias the armature away from the yoke to the extent allowed by an ambient temperature compensating bimetal strip 23 which is welded to the armature 17 and engages a projection 15 of the yoke 12. One end of a braid 14 is welded between points 13 to the yoke 12 and strip 11 and carries current to the movable contact lever 41. Heating of the strip 11 moves the assembly 6 in an anti-clockwise direction and, at the set value, releases catch 34 from a window 18 in the armature 17. Under heavy current fault conditions the magnetic effect of the current in strip 11 attracts the armature 17 to yoke 12 and again releases the catch 34. The end of the bimetal strip 23 may be bent over at 25, into the window 18, to form a latching surface for the catch 34, or a latch piece 61 may be placed in the window 18, Fig. 5.
