Abstract
827,733. Automatic circuit - breakers. SQUARE D CO. March 12, 1956 [May 18, 1955], No. 7597/56. Class 38 (5). A circuit-breaker has its movable contact mounted on the bight portion of a U-shaped contact carrier, the limbs of which are supported in bearing recesses in a manual operating member, the bight being, in transverse section, also of U-shape. The limbs 42 of the contact carrier 41 are located in recesses 37 of the operating handle 35 which is pivoted at 38. A dead-centre tension-spring 43 holds the carrier 41 in its bearings and is connected to a cradle 31 pivoted at 32 and having an arm 34 engaging in an aperture 18 in an armature 17 of a tripping unit 6. The latter comprises a bimetal strip 11 secured to an adjustable connecting strap 4 and carrying a magnetic yoke member 12 to which the armature 17 is pivoted at 19. A compensating bimetal strip 23 is secured to the armature and has a turned-over end 25 in aperture 18 for engagement by the tip of arm 34 of cradle 31. On a maintained moderate overload the bimetal 11 deflects to the right and moves the armature 17 by means of compensating bimetal 23, thereby releasing the cradle 31 and opening contacts 45, 46. An insulating barrier 53 hooked to the carrier 41 confines the arc which is acted on by a U-shaped magnetic member 56 and the gases are vented through an opening 56a. The handle 35 is moved to a central position automatically and the mechanism is reset by moving the handle manually to the Fig. 2 position, so as to tilt cradle 31 counter-clockwise by engagement with a pin 64 thereon, and then moving the handle to the Fig. 1 position, thereby moving bearing 37 across the line of action of spring 43 to close the contacts. When arm 34 is tripped, a positive start is given to the carrier 41 by a projection 61 on the cradle. The circuit-breaker is mounted by clips 48, 50 which together with the other parts are located in recesses in an open-sided housing 1 and cover. The bimetal 11 is connected to the carrier 41 by a pigtail 14 which is welded to the carrier and secured by a flexible tab 49.
