Abstract

674,520. Automatic circuit breakers. WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC INTERNATIONAL CO. Oct. 20, 1950. [Dec, 10, 1949] No. 25580/50. Class 38 (v). A thermally or magnetically trippable switch has a movable contact 23 controlled by a dead-centre spring toggle which may be manually operated and is normally held by a spring-pressed latch 73, which is itself held in latching position by a part 93 of a trip bar 87, as in Specification 611,817, the bar being moved to trip the switch by a resilient member 107 anchored at 102 to the base with a bimetal member 101. parallel thereto. On a persistent overload up to e.g. 1,000 per cent load current, the bimetal deflects to the left and an adjustable screw 105 thereon engages the turned-back end 109 of member 107 to cause tripping. The bimetal member 101 carries a magnet yoke 113 and the member 107 an armature 115 so that on a severe overload, e.g. over 1,000 per cent load current, the armature is attracted to cause instantaneous tripping without movement of the bimetal. In a modification, Fig. 2, the resilient member 125 carries the latch 131 and is moved to the right for tripping on deflection of bimetal member 117 which engages an adjustable screw 139 on the end of member 125.
