Abstract

690,772. Automatic circuit-breakers. GENERAL MOTORS CORPORATION. Feb. 19, 1951 [March 7, 1950], No. 3923/51. Class 38 (v) A thermally-tripped overload-responsive switch comprises a conducting spring arm 22 bifurcated at its free end to provide a pair of prongs 29, 30, the prong 30 carrying a contact 41, and a bimetallic strip 35 having a portion 37 carrying a contact 42 and a portion 40 which acts as a latch for the prong 29. The switch is closed by pressing in a plunger 50 so that an abutment 54 thereon moves the prong 29 up above the latch portion 40, the engagement of the prong 29 with the latch portion 40 holding the switch closed when the plunger is released. The stressing of the spring arm 22 during this movement brings the contact 41 into engagement with the contact 42. Under overload conditions, the current flowing in the bimetallic strip 35 heats it, causing it to deflect outwardly so that the latch portion 40 is moved aside. The prong 29 is released and both prongs 29 and 30 move downwards opening the contacts 41, 42.
