Abstract

952,215. Automatic circuit-breakers. FEDERAL PACIFIC ELECTRIC CO. April 7,1961 No. 12629/61. Heading H2B. The magnetic overcurrent release device of an automatic circuit-breaker has a pivoted armature biased away from a magnetic core by a spring with a line of action which approaches the armature pivot as the armature is attracted to the core and a common adjustment member for the spring and armature back stop. As shown, the armature 98 is biased by spring 102 attached to a bracket 104 which acts as the back-stop and is threaded on a rotatable shaft 108. Rotation of a knob 114 on the shaft 108 moves the bracket 104 towards or away from the armature. The circuit-breaker has a " straight-through " current path from a terminal 14 through a conductor 18, fixed contact 20, movable contact 22, flexible conductor 24 and bar 26 to a terminal 16. The bar 26 may be slotted (Fig. 3, not shown) to provide a restricted path and heats a bi-metal 32 which acts on a pivoted member 96 which is also acted upon by the armature 98, when it is attracted to a U-shaped core 106. The member 96 carries an ambient temperature compensating bi-metal 84 having a latch screw 82 on its free end. The screw 82 releases a pivoted arm 76 which is biased by a spring 88 to act on a trip bar 62 common to three phases (Fig. 2, not shown). The bar 62 has extensions 70 slotted at 88 to support rollers 64 and bent over at 66 to engage the rollers on the side remote from the latch surface of the releasable member 48 which allows the snap-action springs to pass over-centre and open contacts 20, 22.
