Abstract

837,964. Retractive switches. MASON ELECTRIC CORPORATION. Oct. 14, 1957, No. 32016/57. Class 38 (5). The fixed and moving contacts of a switch are interconnected by a snap-acting spring device and the fixed contact is arranged to be yieldable so that as the contact closing force is applied to the moving contact the spring device causes the fixed contact to yield and so prevent closure of the contacts until a predetermined force is applied when the spring device snaps over and allows the contacts to close. Fig. 6 shows a switch comprising an operating member 137 universally pivoted at its lower end and carrying moving contacts 136 and an operating knob 138. Fixed contacts 135 are mounted on resilient metal strips 120 eachof which carries a housing 121 for a snap spring 125. Insulating buttons 130 pass through apertures in each strip 120 and abut the corresponding snap spring 125 and the operating member 137. Movement of the operating member to either side causes the appropriate button 130 to push the fixed contact back until the spring 125 snaps over and the contacts close. Fig. 16 shows a switch having a pivoted member 230 and co-operating pairs of contacts 251, 261 and 262, 281. Housings 249, 283 are provided for snap spring and insulating buttons 247, 284. The snap springs in each housing may be of the same stiffness so that movement of the member 230 to the right causes simultaneous closure of the contacts or the springs may be of different stiffness so that the pairs of contacts close sequentially. Alternatively, springs of the same stiffness may be located at different distances from the contacts to provide sequential operation. A rotary switch, Figs. 12-14 (not shown), and a pushbutton switch, Fig. 18 (not shown), are also described.
