Abstract

1,183,019. Arc extinguishing in switches. BROWN, BOVERI & CO. Ltd. 27 Nov., 1968 [29 Nov., 1967], No. 56226/68. Heading H1N. In a circuit breaker the arc-quenching chamber 3 has upright spaced ceramic plates 4 providing gaps through which the hot gases rise and having transverse ribs D to provide increased cooling. Arcing horns 11 are provided above the contacts 1, 2 and are arranged in series circuit with solenoids 7 of a magnetic system 5, 6 producing a transverse magnetic field. Separate metal electrodes 13 with arcuate horns may be inserted in the gaps between the plates 4 acting to divide the arc and turn the partial arcs through ninety degrees. The electrodes 13 are also arranged so that a solenoid magnetic field is produced. Packs of metal strips 12 are also provided above and in contact with the electrodes 13 to further divide the arc.
