Abstract

939,179. Cold-cathode discharge apparatus. ALLMANNA SVENSKA ELECTRISKA A.B. June 16, 1961 [June 18, 1960], No. 21784/61. Class 39 (1). [Also in Group XXXV] A lightning arrester comprises main electrodes 2, Fig. 1, and at least one intermediate electrode 3 arranged between insulating discs 1 so shaped as to form a deep ignition chamber 10 and a shallower extinction chamber 11. The initial arcs are formed in series between points 4 and are then driven by a magnetic field from a series connected coil (not shown) into the chamber 11 and extinguished. Instead of being radial the ignition points 4, Fig. 2, may be arranged at one edge. The intermediate electrode may be an oblique strip, Z-shaped, or channel-shaped, Fig. 6, with the ignition points on the main electrodes only, as shown, or on the intermediate electrode. A pre-ionizing tongue 7 may be placed in sight of the ignition points. The channel-shaped electrode 3, Fig. 7b, may serve as a gas-circulating channel to relieve gas-pressure in the chamber 11, and a multiple device may be made by stacking double-sided discs 1 upon each other.
