Abstract

814,509. Protective arrangements. WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC INTERNATIONAL CO. May 31, 1957 [June 8, 1956], No. 17341/57. Class 38 (4). A spark gap device comprises electrode members 5 spaced apart to form a spark gap 10, means-such as permanent magnets 7-being provided to produce a constant magnetic field in the spark gap, the device also including means 9 for dividing an initial discharge in the gap 10 into a series of small discharges. When the device is used as a lightning arrester one electrode 5 is connected to a line to be pro - tected whilst the other electrode 5 is connected to earth by way of a non-linear resistor 11. Thus a voltage surge on the line causes an arc to form across the gap 10 which arc, under the influence of the field from the permanent magnets 7, is moved radially outwards into the barriers 9 where it is divided into a number of smaller arcs which are extinguished at a current zero. The permanent magnets 7 are preferably constructed from barium ferrite and are protected from erosion by discs 8 of polytetrafluorethylene.
