Abstract
1,210,629. Surge arresters. BROWN BOVERI & CO. Ltd. 26 Aug., 1969 [28 Aug., 1968], No. 42464/69. Heading H2H. A surge arrester comprises a plurality of series spark gaps and a magnetic blow-out device. Each gap has an ingition gap associated with it. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 1, a voltage-dependent resistor 14 is connected in series with main gaps 11 and a blow-out coil 12 which has a further gap 13 connected across it. Impedances 20 distribute the voltage across the gaps. A parallel circuit path includes ignition gaps 15 and impedances 16, 17, 18, 19. In use the ignition gaps 15 break down first, followed instantaneously by the main gaps 11, since the impedance 18 limits current flow through the ignition gaps. The gaps 15 now extinguish, and the arcs in the main gaps are lengthened magnetically until the voltage becomes such that the ignition gaps 15 again strike over extinguishing the main gaps. The alternating cycle repeats until the over-voltage is cleared. In a modification, Fig. 2 (not shown), the resistors 14 and 18 are divided into parts which are connected alternately with the main gaps 11 and ignition gaps 15 respectively. The construction of the arrester is also described with reference to Figs. 3 and 4 (not shown).
