Abstract

800,252. Lightning arresters. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd. July 9, 1956 [July 8, 1955], No. 19900/55. Class 38 (4). In a lightning arrester having a plurality of spark gap elements connected in series with a non-linear resistor, some of the gaps are shunted by a capacitive impedance and the remainder by resistors, the impedances being arranged to be equal at power frequencies, but at high frequences, the drop in impedance of the capacitive elements causes the voltage across the resistive elements to increase, thus giving a lower flashover voltage across the arrester. As shown, the several gaps are formed by a stack of circular electrode plates 8, 9, spaced alternately by resistance and dielectric material 10. The non- linear resistor (not shown) in series with the stack may be shunted by a condenser to reduce the breakdown voltage under steep-fronted impulse conditions.
