Abstract
1,148,151. Protective apparatus. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. 25 May, 1967 [27 May, 1966], No. 24400/67. Heading H2H. A voltage surge arrester 1 comprises two columns A, B in parallel, each column having spark gaps 5, a protective spark-gap 7 associated with a magnetic blow-out coil 6 and grading impedances Z, a non-linear resistance 3 being connected in series with the two columns AB. In other embodiments each column may have non-linear resistance elements connected therein in addition to the resistance element common to both columns. The arrester has a "flip-flop" type of action in that one or other of the spark gaps in one column sparks over initially until the voltage conditions become such that one or other of the gaps in the other column sparks over whilst the first gap clears. The action repeats until the voltage of the line 4 becomes normal. Fig. 3 shows a physical construction of the apparatus.
