Abstract

855,512. Resistors. ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. May 16, 1957 [May 17, 1956], No. 15456/56. Class 37 A high voltage resistor comprises an assembly of resistor elements in a tubular insulating casing, each having at least one end contact surface and having a partial covering of insulation for the dual purpose of increasing the flashover voltage and providing a surface by which the element is located within the casing. As shown, blocks 10 of resistive material, having sprayed or otherwise metallized ends 10a, contact metal plates 11 having projections 11 a which form the electrodes of a spark gap. Individual elements are separated by annular insulating rings 12. A polythene ring 13, fitted around each element, locates it centrally within a cylindrical porcelain casing 14. Alternatively a covering 15 of epoxy resin may be moulded around each element. Locating ribs 15a are provided. The casing 14 may be filled with gas, the pressure of which may be varied to adjust the spark gap breakdown voltage. alternatively, the spark gap may be replaced by a metal plate between adjacent elements.
